Today I want to talk about why it can feel so hard to write emails fast and well.
If you find yourself overwhelmed when you sit down to write emails, if you find yourself constantly editing yourself and wondering if it’s any good or not, if you hate submitting your emails to your coach for review because you’re so scared of what the feedback is going to be, then you might have Writing Trauma.
Writing Trauma is what many people experience as a result of the school system, their upbringing, their experience at work and other things.
Here are 2 common sources of anxiety that I see people have when I am coaching them on the writing process.
Articulation Anxiety is related to the fear of not communicating properly. This is common for my clients who speak English as a second language. My husband is a great example of this and I did ask his permission to use this example. He has anxiety around writing and speaking because he was raised by parents whose first language was not english. So articulation anxiety can really slow down the process for him when he has to do any work that requires writing and speaking.
It’s also common for my clients who have what I call Debate Club Shame. I came up with this name from my own experience. My entire life, I had multiple people tell me I was bad at debating, I’d never make it in the Debate Club, and I was confusing or “didn’t make sense”, I was told I only speak in half sentences, people don’t understand what I’m saying, the list goes on. So, I have a ton of debate club shame and articulation anxiety. It slows down my writing. Yes! The Email Boss has a hard time writing too, believe it or not.
Then there’s Grading Anxiety. Grading Anxiety is common for my clients who felt like they never got good grades on writing assignments or they had to work really hard for good grades, this is true especially for my clients that have gone through a traumatic higher education experience. They have so much anxiety around grammar, sentence structure, citing sources, and writing the perfect thing. They also have anxiety just sitting at the computer with a blank page, because it reminds them of all the papers they had to write in college.
I want you to know that it is totally normal to have articulation and grading anxiety, and you can still write emails and make a million dollars with it.
I’ve got both. I’ve done it.
I’ve done it with the debate club shame, with the feeling of embarrassment of always being the person that needed extensions on their papers and tests because I just always took so long, all of it.
And this is why I’ve been so intentional about creating a process to overcome writing trauma.
Because this is the stuff that impacts your email conversions that no one talks about.
We recognize inside MDE that writing can be very activating for so many reasons.
We see this come up a lot inside Million Dollar Email particularly with how fast people write.
You will not write emails fast when you are editing every sentence you write as you write it.
You won’t write emails fast when you’re thinking that no one will understand what you mean.
You won’t write emails at all when it just reminds you of those late, painful college nights.
We also see this come up with how people interact with our copy reviews.
For those that don’t know, we offer on demand email and sales page copy reviews inside the program. And we’ve noticed that sometimes people will rely on their copy reviews for confidence in their emails. Almost like they are a “grade” and they are looking for the A. So they might get feedback over and over again before they send an email but we do not recommend doing that at all. For one thing, this seriously impacts your million dollar energy which is your #1 email strategy. But also, the A you’re looking for is sending the email.
Because when you just get a review, apply the feedback and send the email, you will increase your chances to actually make sales.
You won’t make email sales if you’re not sending emails.
Our most successful clients use Copy Reviews as a bonus tool. Copy Reviews are not a “grade”
How do we address all of this inside Million Dollar Email?
To start, we have weekly coaching calls where you can get coached on writing overwhelm.
I recently coached a client who was so overwhelmed with writing. She had 15 emails to write and she said it normally takes her an hour to write just 5 emails. I told her she could get it done in 90 minutes, but she has to stop editing while she goes.
After that coaching, she posted in slack that she wrote 6 emails in 28 minutes.

We also provide trauma informed copy reviews. That means we do not correct your grammar or sentence structure or tell you to use different words than your own. We believe every client is a genius. We believe everyone is a good writer and we don’t grade you. We do not review your copy based on your storytelling ability or your vocabulary or anything like that. Our coaches have a process they follow for reviews that is based on the program’s concepts and helping you apply them in your unique way. We love tearing some copy up, but we know how to do it in a way that’s actionable.
We also have monthly writing email retreats, where we provide a dedicated space every month for you to write emails with a coach and community nearby. You will have the ability to drop in and get all of your emails for the month done, to finally finish the funnel you’ve been putting off, or to get your launch emails off your plate and ready to be scheduled.
