Hello Part Time Millionaires! I am so excited for this episode because I’m going to introduce you to my newest program and truly I thought I couldn’t do better than Million Dollar Email but turns out I’ve got a LOT of value to give.
Many people don’t realize that I have had a Team ever since I was a Side Hustler. I started delegating my DFY Work to one team member that would complete things for me while I was at work. I was making $30,000 months in my Agency, working Part Time on my business and with just 2 Team Members.
As I was planning to leave my job, I wanted to scale my income, but the only way I knew how to do that while still working part time, which is what I wanted, was to get more team members. So that’s what I did. I added on 3 more people and I had a bigger team, but with lower productivity.
Team Producivity is all about proficiency and process. If you don’t have a high proficiency, you need an iron tight process. If you don’t have process, you’re relying on proficiency.
And we really didn’t have either. We were offering too many services for one thing – that was the problem with our process, and our Team just wasn’t proficient enough for the deadlines we were trying to hit, so I started losing a lot of profit and working a lot more in order to maintain everything.
I didn’t understand the concept of team productivity being as simple as proficiency and process.
At that time, I believed that in order to fix this problem, I either needed more team members or I needed my current team members to be full time.
I was so stressed and overworked that I hired someone to consult on my team. We strategized a department model. Where as we grew, we would grow mini departments. That means every few clients, my team would get bigger. I’d have more people to manage and pay.
I also decided to pay one of my contractors significantly more money so they could take less clients in their business and to run the Team so I didn’t have to.
None of that worked out for me, none of it!
I did everything to try to bandaid the situation.
I hired family members and friends because I thought if I trained people who weren’t entrepreneurs that’d be better.
I made people employees because I thought that’d create more loyalty on the team.
I asked people if they would commit to my mission, which I wasn’t even clear of.
It was a hot mess.
I ended up with such a big team and so much payroll anxiety and so much stress, that I stopped having my period and was having false pregnancy symptoms. I’m talking nausea, bloating, and all the other stuff. I took at least 10 tests because I fully thought I was pregnant. The Doctor said I was just under severe stress.
It finally came to me that maybe I needed to fix my process: So I raised my prices, simplified my services, and released some clients. Then, I initiated a proficiency mission. Where I helped my team members become proficient on the top
Platforms and learn how to think conceptually enough to be able to take on any platform that comes their way, and it worked!! and it really felt like things were getting better.
The only thing I had yet to address though, was me.
By this time I went from a Team of 10 to a Team of 5 and things truly felt they were getting better. I was only working 5 hours a month on my Agency because I implemented productivity techniques.
But deep down, I thought it was the Agency Life that almost took me out, now I know it wasn’t that at all. But at that time, you couldn’t tell me different and I wanted out. I knew I wanted out because even when things were going well, I felt done. I was just tired.
I asked 2 of my top team members to be employees and they said yes. I said the hours will be low right now but I hope they’ll pick up soon!
That didn’t work out for me either.
What I’m trying to show you is that I played out literally every textbook mistake I now warn against! I played it ALLL out. I wasn’t letting my contractors be contractors, I was mothering my team, and I was just a hot mess.
The turning point for me, was NOT cute either.
I addressed productivity. But I didn’t address leadership.
All my agency clients were offboarded at once and I had a team I thought I needed to provide hours for. So I had them do meaningless, non needle moving projects JUST so I could pay them. But guess what? I stopped profiting completely.
And me mothering my team did nothing for me, it just made it worse.
I had an employee file for unemployment after leaving and had to deal with the legalities of that.
I had 2 people leave at once, painfully.
And I had to have hard conversations with others, including family members that felt soul crushing.
The Millionaires did not tell me this was going to happen!!!
And truly, I believe that if I had ME as I am today back then, I would’ve had my agency for longer and it would have been a lot less painful.
I’m happy to report that my Team and the way I lead them looks completely different now.
I have 3 Team Members and they are all contractors. They live their happy life and run their business and I live my happy life and run mine.
They support me in exactly what I need the most support in. We are all boundaried and we all keep things simple. I work Part Time and my payroll is peaceful. I am able to take extended breaks and completely delegate my Operations and Client Delivery.
I trust them to handle complex customer service issues without my input. I know exactly how to ask for what I want and receive it. They know how to lead their role and keep me in mine. I’m able to scale my business bigger and bigger without working more hours. In fact, I have served over 100 clients this year already without working more.
And I want this for you.
