As many of you know for my program, Million Dollar Email, I talk a lot about being social media optional.
But what does social media optional really mean? What is the spectrum of being social media optional and how can you design your marketing to allow you to be anywhere on the spectrum you WANT to be, whenever you want to be.
So let’s define social media optional.
Social media optional means that you can sell your offer without social media. You could take a social media hiatus and still make sales.
The way we currently measure this inside the MDE Program is through selling 25% of average monthly income with Email. Because once you can sell a quarter of your income with email, you’re just going to do it over and over again. And most of our clients sell far beyond that in just the first 30 days.
Now I was very intentional about my use of the word optional. Because I want to be clear that just because you can sell without social, doesn’t mean you HAVE to get rid of social media.
I still use social media.
I personally grew up in the era of social media blogging, I’ve had so many different blogs before. I’ve always loved blogging and sharing my life on social media. My friends always would joke about my essays I’d write on social media.
How I like to use social media is through very organic, real time storytelling. And I do so well with that. My friend told me she felt like I was writing diary entries on my business page but it was enjoyable to engage with. I love that. That’s the side of the spectrum I am on.
But I have clients who haven’t posted in over a year and made all their money with email. I have clients more off social than me.
And it’s because there’s a spectrum.
So I want to share with you what the spectrum is based on what I’ve observed with my clients.
I also want to give you insight on how I and my clients move across the spectrum depending on our goals.
And I want you to figure out, what side of the spectrum am I currently on and where do I want to be?
The social media optional spectrum has five checkpoints: Social Only, Happy Bonus Social, Launch Only Social, Hiatus Hopper, Offliner.
Now what’s so interesting about the spectrum, is I find my clients move across it based on a variety of factors including their team support and systems.
For example, I have a client who has been an Offliner all year. But now that she has a team and a rinse and repeat email launch system, she is introducing social media again because why not? She can have people do it.
For myself, I love being on the Happy Bonus Social side of the spectrum, but I am starting to incorporate more planned launch only social, because I have the team and systems for it.
What I really want for all of my Million Dollar Emailers is to make money easier than ever and to not have to rely on social media. I want email to be your most reliable platform because it’s the simplest, highest converting way to market your services and because it’s the easiest form of marketing to delegate. I want you to be able to confidently write emails and know you’ll make sales. I want you to be able to take a social media hiatus and not freak out.
Most of my clients don’t say they want to leave social media forever, they say they just want to not rely on it 100%.
They want to make their launches easier and make passive funnel sales.
So, if you’re curious what side of the spectrum I am on right now. I actually plan on having my team use social more to promote my other platforms such as my podcast and my email list. I also plan to do a lot more organic storytelling than I have recently because that’s really always been my signature. And I plan on keeping it a happy bonus but incorporating a little bit more structure with repurposing.
